The differences from ruby are: 1) it has extremely few inclusions that obstruct clarity and brilliance. 2) while most rubies are enhanced through heat treatment, red spinel has natural beauty that does not require artificial treatment. 3) ruby is doubly refractive, while red spinel is singly refractive. (Like diamond, singly refractive stones have little color unevenness and emit a pure, clear brilliance.)
